SDL_Keysym contains a deprecated field for unicode which may be removed for SDL 2.0 release.
As far as I can tell the field is not set on all "major" platforms and therefore will not be useful for most users. Its existence in a public header therefore becomes (in my opinion) only confusing.
This lets us change things like this...
if (Failed) {
SDL_SetError("We failed");
return -1;
}
...into this...
if (Failed) {
return SDL_SetError("We failed");
}
Fixes Bugzilla #1778.

According to API description:
SDL_RenderSetViewport - Use this function to set the drawing area for rendering on the current target.
DirectFB renderer in DirectFB_UpdateViewport function just sets clip on surface, instead of moving drawing area.
Attached patch uses set clip rectangle to move {x,y} coordinates during draw and blit operations to be compatible with API description.

DirectFB renderer does not support SDL_RENDERER_TARGETTEXTURE what makes it incompatible with GL or GLES(2) renderers.
Attached patched:
- adds support for SDL_RENDERER_TARGETTEXTURE,
- DirectFB RenderCopy converts destination rectangle from floats to ints,
- fixes whitespaces to be the same in whole file.

Recent changes in SDL_sysrenderer.h and SDL_sysvideo.h had no impact on directfb backend.
Attached patch:
- updates interface,
- resolves uninitialized variable reading,
- changes logging tio use SDL_Log API,
- updates configure to use DIRECTFBCONFIG variable instead direct call to directfb-config.
This required a small public API change: SDL_GL_SetSwapInterval() now accepts
negative values, and SDL_GL_GetSwapInterval() doesn't report errors anymore
(if it can't work, it'll return zero as a reasonable default).
If you need to test for errors, such as a lack of swap_control_tear support,
check the results of SDL_GL_SetSwapInterval() when you set your desired
value.
The top level code handles SDL_WINDOWPOS_CENTERED now, and the Cocoa SetWindowPosition call will clear the moveHack before adjusting the window position.
Fixed creating render texture framebuffer.
Removed the need for palette watch, added surface format caching.
Added an SDL_DONTFREE flag so you can't free the window and 1.2 shadow surfaces.
There's a new event that's always sent when the window changes size, and that event is what the renderers listen for to determine if they need to rebind their context.
attached is a working directfb driver diff which works with the current
changes. There are a number of changes around it as well, e.g.
configure.in.
The directfb renderdriver right now still depends on a some "includes"
from src/video/directfb. That's why it is not yet moved to the new
render folder.
Hi Sam,
20100815_1.diff contains updates for the directfb driver:
- more documentation, mainly on software OpenGL in README.directfb
- Revised error handling leading to leaner code
- Improved/fixed OpenGL handling of multiple contexts.
- Made the built-in simple window manager handle OpenGL windows.
- Rewrote pixelformat mapping - this was quite ugly before.
Well, all software GL, but working :-)
I have done some quick changes and at least the code compiles again. It
also works with a number of the test executables with the DFB X11
backend. I hope to find time to get SDLMAME to work with latest SDL1.3
(i.e. rip out multi-keyboard, multi-mice & cursor support) next week to
test it further.
Regards,
André
* Added display parameter to many internal functions so video modes can be set on displays that aren't the public current one.
* The fullscreen mode is associated with fullscreen windows - not displays, so different windows more naturally have a mode associated with them based on their width and height. It's no longer necessary to specify a fullscreen mode, a default one will be picked automatically for fullscreen windows.

Since current DirectFB implementation is incomplete for YUV surfaces (actually causes segmentation faults when trying Lock and use YUV planar textures) I decided to fix it a bit.
Here's a patch that should make DirectFB properly support YUV both packed and planar (3 planes).
(1) Removed SDL_BYTESPERPIXEL at all in favor of DFB_BYTES_PER_PIXEL(SDLToDFBPixelFormat(fmt)) which does return always proper BPP for YUVs too, coz SDL_BYTESPERPIXEL returns incorrect values for FOURCCs
(2) Fixed data->pixels allocation for planar YUVs in CreateTexture, it should allocate 150% more space
(3) Copy other planes for planar YUVs in UpdateTexture
(4) Moved checking if format is supported at all with DirectFB on CreateTexture at the beginning of the code
Waiting for comments,
